Thanks to everyone who helped out in large and small ways in making RedBall a reality in Scottsdale, especially the SPA staff. Diana Fisher was the project coordinator for SPA and was at every site, every time helping to install, chat with locals, and keep everything on track. She also happens to be a rockin’ roller derby girl, able to apply a swift body check when needed. Jesse Perry, the SPA jack-of-all-trades, was always there to help, at least after he got some coffee. And he discovered hidden talents as a ball jumper and upside-down scissor lift operator. Uber-RedBall Assistant and Portland artist Scott Mazariegos was luckily on hand to ply his ways with the vinyl, video the project, put up with grumpy Kurt, and lend that special ‘Scottyness’ to cooking, beer connoisseurship and taqueria hunting.

Special thanks to Valerie Vadala Homer, Director of Scottsdale Public Art, for bringing the project to her town, being a pleasure to work with, and allowing me the occasional corrupting influence at the bar.

Warm thanks to Janie for her hospitality and desert stories; and all the folks at CattleTrack for making us welcome. Brent Bond at Segura Press for a great set of prints, and for taking me to a bar where his first thought was to look for the back door.

Catching the end of the month art walk, the project visited the Bentley Gallery at the hub of Scottsdale’s art district. As the project neared its end, photographers and fans came by for this evening site. Inside Bentley gallery Kurt’s drawings from the original site visit were on view - a total of 12 sites, some of which never came to pass. It was the first time the drawings have ever been shown alongside an installation, and it was a real treat to move between the physical reality of the RedBall installed and the imagination of the installations from the very beginning of the project, site visits and many conversations.

Bill Clinton’s surprise visit to Scottsdale had us scrambling to get to the next site within a tightly enforced timeframe. As we headed back to the Trolley Bridge the Secret Service were closing down the location, so in a quick and dirty rush we threw ball and all into the van to get past the barricades onto the bridge in the nick of time. Or so it seemed, until Bill was a bit late getting to dinner. He eventually drove right by, but strangely was one of the few people in Scottsdale not to take his picture with the RedBall. Must have been hungry.

The Loloma bus station has a stolid, transient atmosphere - people are leaving, arriving or waiting to leave. We inflated RedBall in a perfectly chosen spot, beneath one of the heavy outcrops meant to shelter travelers, where it remained throughout the day oppressed by concrete and shade. The wind blew tumbleweed across the road, confirming the lonely nature of the bus stop. RedBall, in its mysterious, anthropomorphic self, seemed to take on that heaviness, waiting patiently, resilient despite the circumstances holding it in place. I began to notice that passers-by underwent a cycle in the presence of the ball: they’d glance at it in an instant of skepticism and curiosity, slowing down without realizing it, they’d look around to see if anyone was watching before ambling over to casually touch the ball, they’d gingerly try leaning into it, bouncing against it, and then as the ball remained firmly itself, something in them would shift and relax, and they’d smile, look around for someone to talk to, pull out a camera or a cell phone to confirm this strange moment in life that just wasn’t ordinary.

We inflated RedBall at the Senior Center in the cool morning, wedged firmly between the white poles of a large solar trellis located near the mini putting green and the bocce ball courts. There was a sense of joviality in the air and the enormous red ball, squished into place and joyfully present, attracted a minstrel show of visitors: kids bouncing on the sides, teens trying to conquer its height by climbing (one of the project assistants, Jessie, actually made it to the top and sprawled out like a smiling idol) and older folks testing out their creative wits with cameras, props, friends and dogs. Old men bent down and twisted their bodies in unlikely ways, searching for poses to equal the boldness of the ball. One man pulled his shirt up to appear headless and used the ball as proxy for a photo. Women posed in bright clothing worn especially to offset them from the magnetic red. During this gentle all-day party, I marveled at the ball’s ability to set a tone of ease - its very presence seemed to free people to unleash their inner kooks in an environment where no impulse was too outrageous.

Day 6 Pinnacle Peak
Our morning begins again in the dark. I had not been to the northern part of the city in over 7 years and the small country roads I remember seem to have turned into 4 or 6 lane byways. Crazy. The only light you see is the cars that pass going the opposite way and the entrances to communities that are made to feel safe behind a crossable four foot concrete fence. I will say that you do feel like you are in the desert. When we arrive at the street that our map (Google) tells us we need to turn on, we are greeted with a security gate. I’m not sure what they (3 security guards) thought of a white van pulling up at six in the morning asking for directions.
We arrive at Pinnacle Peak as the morning light begins to rise over the horizon. There is a rocky hill just to the east of us that has these boulders that look to be comparable in size to the houses that sit below them. When I squint my eyes they resemble a city skyline whose straight lines have been softened by design, in this case mother nature. In between is a valley that is scattered with houses and condos. Its really quiet here and very beautiful.
We begin to inflate the ball in a shelter that is near the entrance of the hiking trail. Next to the shelter is a park ranger station and several picnic tables that bask at the foot of the peak. In the center is a twenty foot cactus that has a metal hoop (held by cables) that looks to be floating about two thirds of the way up… think the rings of Saturn. For the first time since my arrival there are clouds in the sky and they seem to be playing havoc with the blue background I have become accustom to seeing.
Mid morning I take a short jaunt up the side of the peak to see what vantage points I might discover. I’m not sure how many people come to this location on weekends but I could see cars parked for at least a quarter of a mile on both sides of the street past the entrance. I over heard a couple of times from hikers that all the people on the trail looked like ants following each other, thats how many people where there. When you looked up the side of the peak it did look like multicolored ants making a two way haste for a tidbit of something and then returning to where they had started.
The ball being at this location was a happy surprise for many of the hikers and many photos where taken before and after their long hike. Some of the hikers where not impressed due to the ball taking up their stretching area and seemed to be upset that they had to do what they do off to the side. Many of the people coming to the site where there not to hike but to snap a couple of images of the ball and maybe a couple of shots with family and the peak in the background and then go. With this also came the people that are following the ball and the introduction of the project to their family and friends. I think its cool when you hear the viewer who has seen the ball on several occasions explain to the first time viewer what the project is all about. Its great to hear others thoughts on the ball and how they see the new migrating home it has for the day , and now that we are on last week the interaction with the ball has become more animated as people become comfortable with the idea, the idea that is shaped with every new site.
This was quite a magnificent site. An amazingly busy day at the Pinnacle Peak Park trailhead. Scotty’s post on the way, for now some images from the site. We were their at dawn with the early hikers.

Due to an early morning interview, we decided that it would be best to install the ball late in the afternoon the day before. No need to kill someone the morning of……

If you have not been to the Arabian Library and are into modern minimal structures this will be a real treat for you…. if you are not then go to one of the other 3 branches (I cannot tell you how many times I heard how much people hated this building). The outer shell is made-up of steel panels that have been (Im guessing) chemically rusted to every orange hue you can think of. When you first walk up you may notice that nothing is level on the building, it looks much like a structure that was created and then dropped in a sandbox. Natural light enters the building through the space use of windows in certain areas of the building. Again, its quite magnificent. The inside is sparse which gives way to what is important; the books, the CD’s and the DVD’s.

The ball was placed at the entrance to the building. We had to take the ball up in a lift because of its size. Easy right? What we didn’t realize was that once you where level with the roof, you where about two and a half feet away from the side of the building. Two and a half feet no problem, but then add the twenty four feet we where up in the air. Now thats a problem.

After all was said and done we put the ball in place and inflated it. It was a beautiful evening that as the sun went down on one side of us, the full moon came up on the other. It had a nice reflection off the side of the ball on this crystal clear evening.

The next morning I arrived as the library was opening. You could see the excitement in the faces of the libraries staff. Many came out to snap images with their cell phones. At one point during the morning there must have been a children’s reading time. The parking lot filled up with cars and families rushing to try and not be late. Some parents where as surprised as the kids to see this big object sitting above them while some parents grasped their children’s hands and rushed them by (liked nothing was there) and not letting them investigate this curious object even though their feet where dragging and their free hand was pointing upward. Its interesting to see parents not let kids be kids.

Later in the day it became apparent that more people had heard about the ball and stopped by to take a look and take pictures of them with the ball. Its funny that Im now beginning to recognize faces of people that have been to other sites and feel like there is some sort of a community following. Cool. With this I ended up starting a photo group on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/601201@N25/) and I am hoping that Im not the only one that will be adding images to it.

When school was let out many kids stopped by to much surprise. Many phones where pulled out of pockets and backpacks to record what they where seeing. Soon after we took the ball down, wiped away the rust dust that had rubbed off the library walls and packed it up. What will friday bring?

Day 3: McDowell Mountain Ranch Skate Park
As you drive through many of the neighborhoods in this area there seems to be little differences in shapes and colors. I am not sure how many faux-adobe houses and apartments there are in this town, but they all share common traits such as white or beige coloring, a clay roof and a small, water wasting grass yard that has a couple of palm trees in it. Its like someone forgot that this is the desert and decided that it was to hard to part with their So-Cal lifestyle that they had to bring it with them.
Lets thank whoever decided on erecting this structure and surroundings. Wow, what a beautiful structure. McDowell Mountain Ranch Park is a multi use building that houses a gym, an aerobics/dance/yoga room, a swimming pool with a water-slide and one of those pools that is made to flow like a river (looks sweet for those hot days) and the skate park. The building itself is a work of art; constructed of metal that has slowly turned a rust color accented by simple, natural wood stripes and areas of opaque glass. The simplicity of the structure and its natural surrounding give it a feel of belonging and not placed there without thought or consequence.
We arrive to be greeted by several skater kids all very curious about what we where doing in their space. One young kid asked if it was someone’s birthday and when I explained to him what it was, he was like ‘oh ya, I’ve been reading about this’, and skated off to tell the others in the park. Within an hour there where over 40 skaters doing their saturday ritual of going from one end of the park to the other taking jumps and trying out a new moves. If you are not familiar with skate parks there are some things you need to know like the obvious of not standing in a skaters path or even on the cement… think of it being bad form like when someone steps onto the tennis court in the middle of your long rally or someone walking across a green as you are swinging a club. Yes, skating is a sport and now days parents who grew up skating are doing it next to their kids in much the same way you might have gone and toss the baseball around with a son or daughter.
It was interesting to see how people who where not familiar with the space entered it. Instead of going through an entrance way on the side of the skate park, many resorted to going into the building and avoiding the skate park and would emerge from a door behind the ball. I was asked by one woman where the best place to view the ball was as I pointed across the park to a seating area in a far corner. She had a look of puzzlement and not quite sure how to get there. What was even more interesting was how she turned around went through the building and walked the outer edge of the fence to a spot just behind where I had pointed, she took a couple of pictures and left. Many people and families would only look at the ball from what I would call the back side of the ball avoiding the skate area. It was quite silly.
Many viewers and skaters came and went. One little guy who I am guessing to be 12 years old came up and asked me about the ball and what it was about. I asked him what he thought it was about and he wasn’t sure. I explained to him what the artist intended to a very perplexed and confused look. I then said; “have you ever seen as many old people out here as you have today?” (old being over 30), “uh, no”, “maybe the artist is trying to show that skaters arrant as bad as people think they are and is trying to show them that by bringing them here”. He then looks over his shoulder at his concrete playground, turns to me with a smile on his face and says; “thats cool”, and then skated off.
Is this project about the ball or the interaction between groups of people who may have never come together but for a couple of minutes in a suburban skate park?
We finish our day with one last bit of excitement. As I am taking the ball back to the van, I decide to take it through the park. I ask a skater if he wants to ride the ball down a ramp on the way to the van. After his short trip another skater asks if he can jump over the ball….. uh, why not. What came of that was captured in images that are below this post.

Day Two: The Trolley Bridge

We start our morning in darkness once again. Its colder than I thought it would be here in Scottsdale, but the people make up for it.

We drive up to our location and are greeted by a very spunky morning news lady and her camera man. I think they where there to get shots of the RedBall as it was being installed. The only problem is that the outlet we needed to use was on a timer that turned itself off sometime in the middle of the night… good for the city, bad for us. I’m not sure how many outlets we checked out but all seemed to be turned off. There where four of us looking at each other with some concern. Luckily, we spotted an outlet on a adjacent building in its outdoor dining area that was not open for business yet. We now had power but no way of reaching it. We can thank the Channel 3 camera guy (sorry, but I did not get your name) for helping us out with a very long extension cord and after a short delay we raced to have the ball inflated by the first television spot of the morning.

The ball (for those of you that don’t know) takes a good 45 minutes to inflate. By the time the news crew was ready to broadcast the ball was inflated. The interview looked dramatic as the sun was coming up behind it; a clear deep blue sky waking up to the morning sun was made more intense by an orange reflection that was coming off the water in the canal which slowly makes its way under the Trolley Bridge.

As the sun came up I begin to see the true beauty of this location. The ball is off to one side of the bridge which is made up of concrete, metal and some sort of stainless steel panels that acts like a mirror during certain times of the day. On one end of the bridge there is Old Town Scottsdale and its winding streets and quaint chachkeys shops. On the other, a new super structure which includes apartments, eateries and fancy shops and in the center of both areas a walking bridge with a big red ball.

As the sun moves from low in the horizon to a mid-day placement the shadows become more apparent. The ball and the bridge seem to be helping each other out; they both give an area for which to block or reflect the light. Add the sky and the lack of clouds and we have a photographers dream. Shadows become dark minimal objects that change shape and size every couple of minutes. As the day progressed there was one thing that I noticed; people where ether in too much of a hurry or would stop for a quick second and walk off. I think some where afraid to approach the ball and look from a far in much the same way you might look at a piece of work in a gallery or museum setting. This environment has seemed to have lost that playful innocence that I thought existed everywhere. Luckily, at around the time school is let out, teens, children and parents where stopping by to checkout the big red ball that they had ether seen on television or read in local publications. The kids curiosity gives me hope that the ball is creating a conversation, between who I’m not sure of.

As the afternoon began to unwind the mayor stopped by to give the ball an opening dedication. Many gathered for cookies and Arnold Palmer’s as the sun began to go down on the opposite side of where it started twelve hours ago.
